Excellent HST/GHRS spectra of interstellar hydrogen and deuterium Lyman- absorption toward nearby stars allow us to identify systematic errors that have plagued earlier work and to measure accurate values of the D/H ratio in local interstellar gas. Analysis of 12 sightlines through the Local Interstellar Cloud leads to a mean value of D/H = (1.50 ± 0.10) × 10-5 with all data points lying within ± 1 of the mean. Whether or not the D/H ratio has different values elsewhere in the Galaxy and beyond is a very important open question that will be one of the major objectives of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) mission. 相似文献

This study addresses whether reduced atmospheric pressure (hypobaria) affects the quality traits of radish grown under such environments. Radish (Raphanus sativus L. cv. Cherry Bomb Hybrid II) plants were grown hydroponically in specially designed hypobaric plant growth chambers at three atmospheric pressures; 33, 66, and 96 kPa (control). Oxygen and carbon dioxide partial pressures were maintained constant at 21 and 0.12 kPa, respectively. Plants were harvested at 21 days after planting, with aerial shoots and swollen hypocotyls (edible portion of the radish referred to as the “root” hereafter) separated immediately upon removal from the chambers. Samples were subsequently evaluated for their sensory characteristics (color, taste, overall appearance, and texture), taste-determining factors (glucosinolate and soluble carbohydrate content and myrosinase activity), proximate nutrients (protein, dietary fiber, and carbohydrate) and potential health benefit attributes (antioxidant capacity). In roots of control plants, concentrations of glucosinolate, total soluble sugar, and nitrate, as well as myrosinase activity and total antioxidant capacity (measured as ORACFL), were 2.9, 20, 5.1, 9.4, and 1.9 times greater than the amount in leaves, respectively. There was no significant difference in total antioxidant capacity, sensory characteristics, carbohydrate composition, or proximate nutrient content among the three pressure treatments. However, glucosinolate content in the root and nitrate concentration in the leaf declined as the atmospheric pressure decreased, suggesting perturbation to some nitrogen-related metabolism. 相似文献

The InSight Mars Lander is equipped with an Instrument Deployment System (IDS) and science payload with accompanying auxiliary peripherals mounted on the Lander. The InSight science payload includes a seismometer (SEIS) and Wind and Thermal Shield (WTS), heat flow probe (Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package, HP3) and a precision tracking system (RISE) to measure the size and state of the core, mantle and crust of Mars. The InSight flight system is a close copy of the Mars Phoenix Lander and comprises a Lander, cruise stage, heatshield and backshell. The IDS comprises an Instrument Deployment Arm (IDA), scoop, five finger “claw” grapple, motor controller, arm-mounted Instrument Deployment Camera (IDC), lander-mounted Instrument Context Camera (ICC), and control software. IDS is responsible for the first precision robotic instrument placement and release of SEIS and HP3 on a planetary surface that will enable scientists to perform the first comprehensive surface-based geophysical investigation of Mars’ interior structure. This paper describes the design and operations of the Instrument Deployment Systems (IDS), a critical subsystem of the InSight Mars Lander necessary to achieve the primary scientific goals of the mission including robotic arm geology and physical properties (soil mechanics) investigations at the Landing site. In addition, we present test results of flight IDS Verification and Validation activities including thermal characterization and InSight 2017 Assembly, Test, and Launch Operations (ATLO), Deployment Scenario Test at Lockheed Martin, Denver, where all the flight payloads were successfully deployed with a balloon gravity offload fixture to compensate for Mars to Earth gravity. 相似文献

An accurate value of the D/H ratio in the local interstellar medium (LISM) and a better understanding of the D/H variations
with position in the Galactic disk and halo are vitally important questions as they provide information on the primordial
D/H ratio in the Galaxy at the time of the protosolar nebula, and the amount of astration and mixing in the Galaxy over time.
Recent measurements have been obtained with UV spectrographs on FUSE, HST, and IMAPS using hot white dwarfs, OB stars, and
late-type stars as background light sources against which to measure absorption by D and H in the interstellar medium along
the lines of sight. Recent analyses of FUSE observations of seven white dwarfs and subdwarfs provide a weighted mean value
of D/H = (1.52±0.08) × 10−5 (15.2 ± 0.8 ppm), consistent with the value of (1.50 ± 0.10) × 10−5 (15.0 ± 1.0 ppm) obtained from analysis of lines of sight toward nearby late-type stars. Both numbers refer to the ISM within
about 100 pc of the Sun, which samples warm clouds located within the Local Bubble. Outside of the Local Bubble at distances
of 200 to 500 pc, analyses of far-UV spectra obtained with the IMAPS instrument indicate a much wider range of D/H ratios
between 0.8 to 2.2 ppm. This portion of the Galactic disk provides information on inhomogeneous astration in the Galaxy.

A broad theme emerging from and observations of cool stars is that magnetic fields control the structure and energy balance of the outer atmospheres of these stars. I summarize the phenomena associated with magnetic fields in the Sun and show that similar phenomena occur in cool luminous stars. High dispersion spectra are providing unique information concerning densities, atmospheric extension, and emission line widths. A recent unanticipated discovery is that the transition lines are redshifted (an antiwind) in β Dra (G2 Ib) and perhaps other stars, which I interpret as indicating downflows in closed magnetic flux tubes as are seen in the solar flux tubes above sunspots. Finally, I classify the G and K giants and supergiants into three groups — active stars, quiet stars, and hybrid stars — depending on whether their atmospheres are dominated by closed magnetic flux tubes, open field geometries, or a predominately open geometry with a few closed flux tubes embedded. 相似文献

Measurements and theory of diurnal and semidiurnal tidal oscillations between about 25 and 80 km are reviewed. At latitudes greater than about 30°, meridional (N-S) wind components are consistently in quadrature with and similar to the zonal (E-W) components. The tidal structures are interpreted as a superposition of quasi-steady higher-order modes excited in the troposphere by sources of limited extent (1,000–10,000 km). At latitudes less than about 30°, steady or quasi-steady diurnal and semidiurnal components are not necessarily the dominant components of the daily variation. At high latitudes diurnal phases generally show little change with height in comparison with observations at lower latitudes, in accord with the latitudinal properties of diurnal modes with positive and negative equivalent depths. 相似文献

We review the evidence for both systematic variations in the optical properties of the Io torus with magnetic longitude and for plasma corotational lag. We summarize the results of a recent paper in which we showed that observed longitudinal variations in [SII] emission and contemporaneous measurements indicating little longitudinal variation in total charge density can be explained in terms of local (i.e., longitudinally confined) plasma sources and effects of corotational lag. We present here new measurements of both [SII] and [SIII] emissions as a function of magnetic longitude that indicate local plasma production, but no significant departure of the bulk plasma from corotation. The data suggest, however, that the longitudes of plasma formation drift in the sense of subcorotation. 相似文献

A review is given of the ways in which the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has participated in international efforts to explore the solar system. Past examples of successful international cooperative programs are described. Prospects for future cooperative efforts are discussed with emphasis placed on current events, issues, and trends which are likely to affect possibilities for cooperation over the next 5 to 10 years. Key factors which will play a major role in shaping future prospects for cooperation include the move towards balancing the budget in the United States and the impact of the Challenger accident on the NASA program. 相似文献
